Abstract. Undergraduate students from the Universiti Brunei Darussalam observed secondary school teachers in action over a period of four weeks. The data reported specifically focused on what the students, who were themselves studying to become teachers, considered to be ‘good teaching’. This paper discusses the dichotomy between their emphasis on cognition, in the context of academic excellence as measured by examination grades, and the affective orientation of the humanistic model of teaching. Finally the author argues for the contribution that can be made to ‘redesigning pedagogy ’ by taking into account the views of such interested observers as future teachers
