Abstract. Phytosociological data from the Bulgarian mires below the timberline were gathered and analysed by TWINSPAN and DCA. As a result, a classification is proposed of the submontane mires into nine associations. Five associations occupying both extremes of the pH gradient have been identified with the associations being recognised also in other European countries, while three associations are described as new. Two new associations contain grassland species with South European distribution, the third one is characterised by the presence of species typical of intermittently wet mineral-rich soils
