Space analog studies, whether happening in dedicated simulated environments (simulators) or indirect environmental analogs (polar stations, submarines, etc.) have concentrated on isolation and confinement effects on morale and performance. Means of collecting anthropological data in space analog settings are multiple. The specific tools and methods used on Expedition One, a thirty-day surface mission simulation in a Mars-analog research station (MDRS, Utah, 2003), are presented along with their expected outcomes, and recommendations for future studies and real Mars expeditions
