Cultural Landscape in the Island with the Status of Borderland: A

A variety of islands are found across the globe whose sovereignty as well as ownership have been or still are disputed, such as Cyprus, Gibraltar and the Spratly Islands in the South China Sea. However, the disputes over the Falklands (Malvinas) between Britain and Argentina in 1982 stimulated the concerns and interests in the studies of contested islands. Apart from the colonies many island states achieved independence after the 1970s, the contexts of disputed islands (or properly merely a rock) have expanded broadly and are related to maritime boundaries, territory and the consequent resources, such as fishing or oil. Today, islands face more complicated challenges in reaching ruling state’s national achievement for geo-political purposes, military security or economic benefits. In fact, the significant influence and function of borderland has overlapped or is overlapping or is going to overlap on those disputed (contested) islands.
