An analysis of the Free Electron Laser (FEL) operating in the non-linear high-gain regime and including the e!ects of Coherent Spontaneous Emission (CSE) and electron energy spread is presented. The results from this model are compared with previous work which neglected the e!ects of CSE. The results show that CSE can signi"cantly reduce the start-up time and enhance the generation of high intensity, short, superradiant radiation pulses in a poor-quality electro
