This dissertation presents a beginner’s guide to serial music. It briefly places twelve-tone music in historic context and discusses the evolution of music following the late romantic period. It then gives an overview to the basics behind the tone row; its derived forms, the pitfalls awaiting the composer and finally discusses the importance of tension control when composing a serial piece
