Underwater electromagnetic communication has had very few practical applications to date. Limitation of current, established wireless underwater techniques has encouraged Wireless Fibre Systems Ltd to investigate the potential applications in the light of modern digital techniques. The initial investigation, funded by the DTC, has revealed that electromagnetic signalling, coupled with digital technology and signal compression techniques, has many advantages that make it suitable for niche underwater applications.
