In Japan, the urban heat island (UHI) in summer has an important effect on energy demand and the peak electric power load due to the use of air-conditioning. This study quantified the impact of UHI on energy consumption for space heating, cooling, and water heating in the residential and commercial sectors of metropolitan Tokyo. UHI in metropolitan Tokyo was simulated using the Colorado State University Mesoscale Model (CSU-MM) for two cases: the actual conditions and the absence of urban effects. We then estimated the energy consumption corresponding to each of the temperature distributions and compared the results. The results revealed that the commercial energy consumption increased, while the residential energy consumption decreased due...
