Discontinuous Electrophoresis on Polyacrylamide Gel Slab

An apparatus for discontinuous electrophoresis on a slab of polyacrylamide gel is described. It affords resolution of serum protein as distinct as that with electro-phoresis on a column of gel, but with considerable simplification in technic. D ISCOT1XUOUS ELECT1IO1’HORESIS in polyacrylamide rods has been used for separation of serum proteins (1). In spite of satisfactory resolution in tile rod, the technic renhains cumbersome, and comparison of the closely migrating cOnlpoflents inaccurate. Akroyd (2) reported discon-tinuous electrophoresis On polyacrylamide gel slab, which alleviates many of the difficulties of the rod. We llave considerably modified and simplified the electrophoresis on a gel slab so that many samples can be easily processed in one day with a resolution equal to that obtained in polyacrylamide rod.
