MEI (Music Encoding Initiative, pronounced “may”) is a new computer file format that uses XML syntax to store musical data. Musical data stored in MEI files can be retrieved and used to generate printed music notation. Because music notation requires storing a great deal of information about the music, it is possible that the format will be useful for other purposes such as analysis and cataloguing as well.
