In this paper we describe our experience of using Scalable Vector Graphics (SVG) and X3D (an XML representation of VRML) as the technology foundation for a first course in computer graphics, offered for the first time in January-March 2002. The paper reflects on the suitability of SVG and X3D for the purpose, and raises some open questions for our course. The paper also describes the use of SVG as a language in which to create teaching materials
