The chapters in this volume show that the notion of European identity is a complex one and that it entails many conceptual approaches. Almost every contributor to this volume utilizes a different theoretical perspec-tive on European identity. This conceptual variety is caused, on the one hand, by the fact that the phenomenon of collective identity is of an in-terdisciplinary nature. It was primarily anchored in psychology and so-ciology, but has successively become enriched by other disciplines such as philosophy and political science, which in turn shed light on it with their specific methods and questions.
