The term social movement unionism (SMU) has never been used to define the main thrust of British unionism. However, union decline has driven a general search for effective revival strategies. Drawing on interview research, this paper examines the nature and extent of the Trades Union Congress ’ (TUC) engagement with alliance-building with social movements, a potentially key facet of SMU. Related findings on its significance in revival and wider terms inform a discussion of potential TUC and union policy and practice. 1
