Acetylcholinesterase (AChE. 3.1.1.7) enzyme from the juveniles (J2) and females of both Heterodera zeae and Meloidogyne incognita was purified by ammonium sulphate precipitation, Sephadex G-25, Sephadex G-200, DEAE-cellulose and DEAE-sephadex A-50 gel chromatography. Highly purified AChE preparations were obtained from both stages of the plant parasitic nematodes. The existence of the cholinergic system in nematodes is discussed, especially as the greater enzyme activity in females than in J2 suggests a correlation with development in the nematodes.
