ROLE CLARITY: A NECESSARY STEP TO PROMOTING INTERPROFESSIONAL PRACTICE

An Action Research approach was used thereby allowing all stakeholders ’ views to be taken into account using multiple methods (CiPeL, 2007) and allowing us to continuously cycle through processes of investigation that work towards practical and effective solutions. Using a Qualitative Interpretive Descriptive approach (Thorne et al., 2004), data were collected during focus groups with LTC care providers who make up the nursing care team (e.g., personal care attendants/personal support workers, registered practical nurses, registered nurses). As well, individual interviews and meetings were held with stakeholders to ensure their input and validate research findings. Separate focus groups were held with PSWs, RPNs, and RNs and four common themes of We Do More Than Task, Our Roles are Unclear to Others, We need to Work as a Team, We want to be Valued, were identified. Using the four identified themes across the PSW, RPN, and RN groups and with input from our clinical partners the Clinical Nursing role Effectiveness Framework (Calgary Regional Health, 2008) was adapted and modified to create a role clarity framework specific for long-term care. The framework has four focus domains that span across the care team disciplines. Methodology / Results LTC staff, management and students recognize the need for and desire: role clarification; effective interprofessional working; review of operational situations to remove team work barriers.
