The difference in boundary layer heights between urban and rural sites has been examined in Helsinki Metropolitan area using ceilometers. The study consists of 24 days of data with special emphasis on three temperature inversion periods. The examined cases show no systematic difference in boundary layer heights between urban and rural sites. However, in urban and suburban sites the boundary layer height evaluation by ceilometer was more reliable than in rural sites because of higher aerosol concentrations
