How can problem solving be used as a tool for cognitive development? Can problem solving be used to effect a change in learners ’ attitudes and beliefs about mathematics so that they come to view mathematics as a discipline founded on reasoning? What are some strategies that in-structors may use in the process? To seek answers to these questions, I conducted a study with a group of prospective elementary school teachers. In this article, I describe briefly my attempts to answer the above questions
