Tobacco use is one of the chief preventable causes of death in the world. The World Health Organization (WHO) attributes approximately 4.9 million deaths a year to tobacco use, a figure expected to double by 2030. Unless current trends are impacted, the vast majority of these deaths are projected to occur in the developing world. More often than not, smoking initiation starts early in life. An important challenge to those committed to the well-being of children around the world is to lessen the potentially deadly impact of tobacco by helping young people avoid smoking initiation and assisting them with cessation and remaining tobacco-free if they have already started.
