Experimental data have demonstrated that impaired antioxidant capacity is associated with increased levels of reactive oxygen species (ROS) production. ROS can cause inactivation of critical enzymes and induce denaturation that renders proteins nonfunctional. Total blood is continuously exposed to oxidative stress.
