In the late 1980s the World Bank commissioned research on the distortions to agricultural incentives; the results were influential in directing agricultural development policy for more than a decade. Now, this research is in the process of being updated, and South Africa has been included as one of the countries where these distortions have been measured. This article analyses the evolution and extent of distortions to agricultural incentives in South Africa. These results show the effects of the extensive liberalisation of trade in agricultural products since 1994, and of the domestic market deregulation that took place in 1997
