Much like physicians who suffer from therapeutic impotence in their inability to cure, anthropologists who believe they know how to effectively engage people in protecting themselves suffer from a kind of social and political impotence. Some suffer in silence; others write, use gallows humor, or scream; still others disengage. (Brooke G.
