Performance-based design has been widely recognized as an idealized method for future seismic design in practice. A draft seismic design code for buildings by introducing performance-based design methodology has been proposed in this research. First of all, the current code provisions have been examined according to the theoretical basis of PBSD. Several key issues have then been investigated to clarify why, what and how to incorporate the methodology of PBSD in domestic seismic design code currently. In the proposed draft code, transparent seismic design objectives and criteria for buildings of different use group have been established quantitatively.
