Connecticut Department of Transportation personnel used an infrared camera to observe thermal segregation of hot mix asphalt during pavement construction. Several sites were selected for study from ongoing paving projects. During paving operations, the infrared camera was used to look at the mix being discharged from the truck, to the paver, and to the mat. Cold spots/areas were located, marked, and referenced to a predetermined coordinate system within each of the monitored test sections. Nuclear density tests were performed and cores were extracted for further analysis at the located cold spots/areas. Selected sites will be monitored for
