Abstract: This paper aims to present an ANSI/NISO Z39.50 protocol for distributed searching in library applications. It specifies Z39.50 client and Z39.50 server behavior for search and retrieval across online library catalogues. The paper examines the potential of Z39.50 to enable new methods of data creation and exchange in library networks.
