Abstract: From a review of the thermal plasma properties advantageous for materials processing, requirements are derived for thermal plasma generators. The generators are classified according to power conversion mechanism and the cathode electron emission, and designs for specific applications are discussed within each classification. Recent unconventional approaches to thermal plasma generation are also included
