In constructivist classrooms, young children's participation in rule making promotes their moral development. Rheta DeVries and Betty Zan Sherice Hetrick-Ortman's kindergartners were passionate about block building. These children at the Freeburg Early Childhood Program in Waterloo, Iowa, lavished care on their complex structures and felt justly proud of their creations. Some of the children were concerned, however, about problems in the block area.
