Abstract This paper describes the conduct and delivery of the teaching, and the assessment of Engineering Context using project-based approach. Engineering Context, a common and compulsory subject in the 1st year engineering curriculum, is introduced to all engineering students at Monash University Malaysia. This subject has been developed to overcome two key perceived problems of new engineering students: a lack of understanding of what engineers actually do, and of the environment in which they work and interact with the community. It uses project-based learning to allow an introduction to engineering. Key engineering issues such as product life cycle design, economics, sustainable development, ecology and professional ethics are taught....
