SILENCE is a European project, started in 2005, which adresses the problem of reduction and control of surface transport noise in urban areas. Within this framework, a Global Modelling Tool is developed. The aim is to predict and simulate the noise emitted by a vehicle (train, tram, car) under real operating conditions. This tool will be used for parametrical and psychoacoustic studies to test noise reduction solutions. A software, called VAMPPASS, is currently implemented. A vehicle is represented as a set of equivalent point sources. Each source is defined by its position, and its characteristics in terms of emission level, radiation pattern and evolution with speed.
