Abstract This paper studies the reliable dynamic output-feedback control of linear systems based on either component fault, that is, either sensor or actuator faults. A more practical continuous fault model of sensor and actuator than discrete model is considered. The resulting control systems are reliable in that they provide guaranteed asymptotic stability and H ∞ performance when all control components is operational, as well as when either sensor or actuator faults occur. A given H ∞ performance bound in failure cases is guaranteed and the H ∞ performance in the nominal case is optimized. A numerical example is also given to illustrate the design procedures and their effectiveness
