Sooo... you’re a lecturer!

We’ve all graduated with a degree in Computer Science or Computing or Information Systems or Information Technology or whatever the trendy name for our discipline was when we studied towards the coveted piece of paper. Then we continued studying towards an Honneurs and a Masters degree. By this time, we probably became lecturers at tertiary institutions and continued reading towards a PhD (or D.Sc, D.Comm etc). So we became lecturers, with a sound subject related knowledge, but most of us with none or very litttle specific preparation and/or training to be lecturers. Lecturers at tertiary institutions have two main tasks: teaching(lecturing) and research. This talk takes a light hearted look at the roles of the lecturer cum teacher. Some of these roles are very obvious, such as the lecturer being the expert and the formal authority, but there are also some more “obscure ” roles, such as the lecturer being a public relations officer. Some roles or aspects of these roles may overlap. This talk should be interesting and valuable to all lecturers attending SACLA regardless of their specific field of expertise
