Problem In industrialized societies, the consequences of dropping out of school before receiving a high school diploma are considerable for both individuals and society as a whole. Compared to national averages, dropouts are more likely to be recipients of welfare and unemployment insurance,1 experience more physical and mental health problems, engage in illegal activities, and are more prone to psychoactive substance abuse.
