A War On Terms: moving the discussion of managing complexity in projects forward

If we are to begin to consider the real issues surrounding the matters of managing complexity in the context of projects, then there are some significant and fundamental issues, I think, to be addressed first. In this discussion paper I am going to make suggestions as to what some of these issues are and how we might begin to resolve them. Also, I will put forward some topics that I think need to be part of the “managing complexity in projects ” discourse. Firstly, it is important to accept that if we are to fully embrace the concept of complexity in projects then we must come to understand and acknowledge the evolutionary nature of the human social environment that projects manifest and take place. The social complexity literature refers to evolutionary psychology and sociology which attempts to understand the human mind, human behaviour
