In November 2004 it was decided that EarthCARE would become the European Space Agency‘s (ESA’s) sixth Earth Explorer mission after GOCE, ADM-Aeolus, Cryosat, SMOS and SWARM. The EarthCARE mission is a joint undertaking by ESA and Japan. The mission has been specifically defined with the scientific objectives of determining for the first time, in a radiatively consistent manner, the global distribution of vertical profiles of cloud and aerosol field characteristics to provide basic essential input data for numerical modelling and global studies.
