Abstract: This paper illustrates the introduction of realistic simulations and experimental components as a teaching material to enhance the student learning process. Two technically demanding areas are discussed, namely building management systems and flexible robotic manipulators. The former is illustrated with reference to a building services application, which is emulated via a laboratory scale test-cell. The later case is the study of a prototype single link flexible robotic manipulator system in terms of its simulation and control
