Originally the term "periodic" was used for this regimen in the early 1960s (3). In the late 1960s, this term was replaced by the term intermittent peritoneal dialysis due to an influence of hemodialysis terminology. Until the early 1960s, the term intermittent peritoneal dialysis had been applied to the technique (vide infra) not to the regimen.
