Cluster phases tend to appear when bulk phase separation is frustrated. This happens for instance in systems containing amphiphilic molecules: if the heads and tails of such molecules could move independently, the polar head-groups and the non-polar tails would demix. However, as the two parts of the molecules are connected, bulk phase separation is impossible and the system undergoes microphase separation, forming micellar solutions, micro-emulsions or lamellar structures.
