TRANSJUGULAR intrahepatic porto-systemic shunts (TIPS) are an effective method for reducing portal vein pres-sure. They have been proven useful for treatment of acute and chronic esophageal, gastric, intestinal and stomal variceal hemorrhage; severe or refractory ascites; hepatic hydrotho-rax; and possibly Budd-Chiari syn-drome (1–29).
