Premature destruction of erythroid precursors in bone marrow is termed ineffective erythropoiesis. Ineffective erythropoiesis normally occurs in <10% of developing cells [1]. Much larger numbers of cells are lost in myelodysplastic syndromes (MDS), hemoglobinopathies, congenital dyserythropoietic anemias, and megaloblastic anemia. MDS are characterized by blood cytopenia despite the presence of a hypercellular marrow [2]. It is difficult to measure the degree of ineffective erythropoiesis.
