In this article, we give an overview over broadcast and multicast in IP networks. After introducing to the general broadcast and multicast basics, we present some techniques used for multicast routing and reliable multicast. Finally we show the problems concerning video transmission over multicast networks with heterogeneous receivers. We do not discuss any protocol in detail, but try to extract the most important ideas to give a base for further studies.
