In this study, the affect of a project-based learning (PBL) introductory course on the Capacity for Engineering Systems Thinking (CEST) of freshman students, is considered. Four aspects of engineering systems thinking were evident in the students ' responses: conceptualization, requirements, alternatives, and optimum. The findings of this study indicate, that freshman engineering students may develop approaches and strategies related to systems engineering, though the extent of this development is individual. Some of the students seemed to be more successful in developing system-level perspectives while others seemed frustrated by their inability to see the big picture.
