This article considers the implications of psychotherapy re-search for psychotherapy training in psychiatry. Recent surveys conducted in Canada and the US indicate that psychi-atrists continue to spend a substantial amount of time provid-ing psychotherapy. In a survey of Canadian psychiatrists, Leszcz and colleagues found that 92 % spent almost one-half of their clinical time engaged in psychotherapy (1). A survey of the office practices of US psychiatrists conducted by Olfson, Marcus, and Pincus indicated that 79 % of their pa-tients received psychotherapy in 1995 (2).
