CONCLUSION Most physiological activity in FDG whole-body PET scans for tumor staging is visualized consistently. The brain, lung, liver, bone marrow and urinary system are consistently seen. Cardiac activity is inconsistent and related to the switch from FDG to free fatty acid metabolism (12). The most striking and irregular FDG uptake pattern is associated with various muscle groups that are exercised just before FDG injection. Because "hot " muscle groups can interfere with the diagnostic quality of a scan, care should be taken, particularly in the neck region, to rest the patient comfortably before injection.
