This paper investigates the adequacy of the present definitions and techniques for power measurement under non-sinusoidal conditions. The paper uses a theoretical case study to evaluate the performance of the IEEE 1459-2000 Standard and the Unidirectional-Bidirectional method in power measurement of a simplest nonlinear circuit. The case study demonstrates that both methods provide the incorrect power measurement; hence they are inadequate for power measurement under non-sinusoidal conditions. The source of the inadequacy is pinpointed, the need for improvement is stated and the future work is indicated
