Japan’s population decreased last year, two years earlier than expected, for the first time since the World War II. It will continue to decrease in the coming decades due to low fertility rate and aging of society. By 2050, the total population will decrease from 127 million in 2000 to 101 million by 20.7 % and people older than 65 years old which accounted for 17.4 % of the total population in 2000 will account for 35.7 % of the total population.
