We dealt with the flow pattern of an elongated sharp edges rectangular cylinder immersed in a free surface flow. The mean flow structure around the obstacle has been experimentally detected starting from PIV (Particle Image Velocimetry) time resolved velocity field. We obtained and analyzed the topological reconstruction of the flow field for several submersion levels of the cylinder. Moreover, by the parametric characterization of the topological structure of the flow field, we provided the influence of the cylinder submersion on the dimension and position of the main vortex structures. These quantities have been compared with the hydrodynamic loading on the cylinder in the same experimental conditions
