Draft, comments welcome The paper aims at better understanding the monetary role of patents for SMEs. The analysis relies on an original dataset based on an international survey carried out by the European Patent Office. The main results can be summarized as follows. First, the monetary uses of patent are strongly associated with SMEs. 30 to 40 percent of European and US SMEs do patent for such reasons. Second, companies in the US severely outperform these in Europe in terms of licensing: controlling for the willingness to license and the size of the patents portfolio, the share of patents licensed for European SMEs still remains significantly lower as compared with US SMEs.
