The complexation of Cd by natural organic ligands in the upper 600 m of the central North Pacific was determined with differential pulse anodic stripping voltametry at a thin mercury film, rotating glassy-carbon disk electrode. About 70 % of the dissolved Cd in surface waters was bound in strong complexes (K’,,,,‘,, c.,2, = 10’2.0 M-‘) by relatively Cd-specific organic ligands existing at low concentrations (0.1 nM).
