A STUDY OF EFFECTIVENESS ON OVERHEAD FOOTBRIDGES

Abstract: The study of The Effectiveness of Overhead Footbridge Utilisation is a area of concern with respect to the pedestrian safety. The study is very important in order to identify the direct as well indirect reason, which contribute to the utilization of footbridges by the pedestrian. Sets of a data have been collected at eight various footbridges around Kuala Lumpur city centre. Volume of traffics and pedestrians crossing the roads are recorded manually and electronically using video camera. The study from data analysis has shown that the usage of footbridges is linearly proportionate with the traffic volume, volume per capacity ratio (V/C), location, bus stop and intersections. In addition, the footbridges ’ designs, signboards and fences, which lead to pedestrians ’ comfort and safety, also play some important roles on the effectiveness of footbridges utilisation. The finding from this study shall be considered in future design to improve the effectiveness of using footbridges and more important is consequently reduce the number of road accidents which involve pedestrians
