annual estimates of the total and school-age populations in school districts in compliance with Title I of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act of 1994 and, more recently, the No Child Left Behind Act of 2001. The population estimates are combined with estimates of the numbers of children in poverty2 to allocate federal funds to school districts (NRC 2000). The Population Division is testing alternative data sources and developing new methods for producing school district population estimates in order to address some of the weaknesses of the current methodology and improve the accuracy of the estimates.
