Geodetic instruments providing prismless electronic distance measurement – like robot tacheometres and terrestrial laser scanners – show encouraging prospects concerning deformation measurements. Various periodic monitoring tasks to detect movements of constructive parts or of masses can be solved by such polar systems. Here different examples and experiences of practical applications will be reported, mostly within recent monitoring projects of the Chair of Geodesy at Munich University of Technology.
